WEBINAR - HVO and SAF: Fueling Decarbonization
Note, this Webinar was held on May 3rd - if you missed it Contact Us for further information
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is becoming increasingly a focus of the airline industry. This is because unlike terrestrial or marine transportation, fewer options are available to decarbonize the air transportation. While electric or hydrogen power may work for shorter flights, long flights and particularly cargo will require a liquid fuel for the foreseeable future. HVO is both currently the lowest cost and only commercial route to SAF with real quantities available in the market, though several other routes are commercializing or approaching commercialization currently.
This webinar will explore the options for decarbonization of transportation with a particular emphasis on HVO and alternative SAF technologies (including ATJ, FT, and others) with a discussion of high level insights found in the NexantECA reports: Biorenewable Insights: Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVO)(2022), Market Insights: Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVO)(2022), and Biorenewable Insights: Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)(2021).

Biorenewable Insights - Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) (2022 Program)
This report is techno-economic overview of available major licensable technologies for the production of renewable diesel, SAF, renewable naphtha, and renewable LPG via hydrotreating of vegetable oils. Major technologies covered include UOP Ecofining, Haldor Topsoe Hydroflex, Axens Vegan, Neste NExBTL and Sulzer Bioflux. The report compares economics for maximum renewable diesel mode and maximum SAF modes with both virgin and UCO feedstocks. A review and analysis of planned capacities to 2030 are included as well.
Biorenewable Insights: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) (2021 Program)
This report investigates the technical, economic, and commercial aspects of the growing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry. Cost of production estimate models are provided for 20 different technologies (across several regions) including various HVO, ATJ, thermochemical and other low carbon intensity technologies – credits are included in the analysis based upon carbon intensity. Capacity analysis, process descriptions, and strategic insights are also provided.
